In Czechoslovakia, Ludvik Jahn, a university student and active party member plays a joke on a classmate and sends a postcard that satirizes the prevailing optimism. The joke is not funny for university leaders and Ludvik is expelled from university and the Party. What Ludvik has lived has not been a trick of life. He cannot blame the fate but himself.
